Abalimi Bezekhaya’s nurseries - the ‘People’s Garden Centres’- supply people of the Cape Flat’s with low-cost agricultural inputs and the necessary training to start their own vegetable gardens. The project has grown to such an extent that many locals can now not only ensure their families go to bed with full tummies but earn an income by selling surplus organic vegetables to Cape Town’s markets.

Nearly 3000 Cape Flats families benefit directly from the innovative organic vegetable farming projects established mostly by local women.

Thanks to WWF and Nedbank’s Green Affinity clients, The Green Trust supported Abalimi Bezekhaya for 10 years (1992-2002) laying the foundation for Abalimi to become a leading urban micro-farming and greening model.
